Solid little truck
Tough little truck, super easy to work on. You get $300 worth of add-ons compared to the xl5 4x4 for just $140 more. It's so popular that you can just walk into most hobby stores and find parts without ordering. Performance-wise, it hits 35mph with the stock battery, over 40mph with a 2s lipo, and around 50mph with a 3s lipo. Swap the stock gear with the extra one it comes with, and you can add 9-15mph to those speeds. Totally worth the price!
Our Favorite RC Truck
This is the best RC truck we've owned. It's fast, fun, and super durable. We absolutely love it. It handles big jumps and hard landings like a champ. We even use it to play with our dog, who loves to chase and chew on the tires, but they haven't ripped yet. I clocked it at 27mph with a cheap 2s lipo on one of those neighborhood speed signs, not sure how accurate they are. It's still stock, with original wheels, tires, and gearing. There's room to tweak it for more top speed, but we like the acceleration for grass runs. We've owned Stampedes since 2001, and this newer version has beefier parts. The 4x4 layout is different, but you can see improvements in the axles and bearings. The driveshaft ends are the only weak spot, they break a lot. I thought about getting stronger ones but decided it's better to replace these than the gears. Maybe loosening the clutch would help. Not taking a star off, these parts break under heavy use like grass, hard stops, and the dog chewing on it. Nothing else could survive this abuse.
Electronics are awful
If you wanna learn to fix RC stuff, this is the one for you. I’ve had mine less than a month and already used the warranty for a new ESC and receiver. It’s fun when it works, but the electronics suck. Oh, and it only comes with a car charger for the battery?? But hey, you can buy a wall adapter for $25 from Traxxas, how nice of them!
